Plot summary
Max Rothman returns to Munich in 1918 after losing his right arm at the Third Battle of Ypres, which ended his own work as a painter. He opens a gallery for modern art and lives with his wife Nina, while also seeing Liselore von Peltz. A chance encounter brings him Adolf Hitler, a fellow veteran angry at Germany's defeat and the terms of the Versailles Treaty, who paints and wants his pictures shown. Rothman thinks the work shows talent he has not yet reached, and though he knows the man's antisemitism, he agrees to take some paintings on contract. Captain Karl Mayr, a Reichswehr officer, hears Hitler address passersby and urges him toward politics and propaganda, offering army money for his expenses and a place in his movement.

- When Menno Meyjes was shopping his script around Hollywood, he first approached Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment for funding. Spielberg told him the script was well written but that he would personally feel uncomfortable funding it without insulting the memory of Holocaust survivors, and encouraged Meyjes to make the film without Amblin.
- Star John Cusack agreed to take no salary for his lead role as the art dealer Max Rothman, as part of helping to finance the film.
- Gossip blogger Roger Friedman was criticized by Mica Rosenberg of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency for writing a review of Max even though he had never seen the film, having read only an advance copy of the screenplay.
