Plot summary
In Eternos, capital of Eternia, the boy Prince Adam trains in battle alongside his friend Teela under Duncan, the king's Man-At-Arms. Skeletor's forces storm the city, seizing Adam's parents, King Randor and Queen Marlena, while the mercenary Trap Jaw leaves Duncan badly wounded. The Sorceress, who keeps Castle Grayskull, opens a portal and gives Adam the Sword of Power, sending him to Earth, where he loses the blade. Fifteen years on, Adam works in human resources in Oklahoma City and keeps chasing any word of the sword. An anonymous message leads him to it in a comic store, and he is arrested, then ambushed on a freeway by Beast Man. Teela, warned the moment he touched the sword, reaches him, and the two fly to the ruins of Eternos, where Eternia's warriors hide from Skeletor's rule.

- Jared Leto did not simply audition for the villain Skeletor; director Travis Knight said Leto proactively approached the studio and filmmakers himself because he is a huge fan of the franchise and wanted to "swing for the fences" with the character.
- Netflix, which had acquired the film's rights in 2022, canceled the project in July 2023 after spending $30 million on its development, citing budget concerns and forcing Mattel to look for a new studio to make the film.
- An earlier script by writer-director David S. Goyer was scrapped after Sony decided it would be too expensive to film, since Goyer had envisioned the movie on the epic scale of The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
- Dolph Lundgren, who played He-Man in the original 1987 film, makes a cameo in the new movie as a character called "Macho Man" whom Adam runs into at a gym.
- To promote the film, Amazon staged a drone light show over Los Angeles on May 19, 2026 that set a new Guinness World Record for the largest drone light show ever performed.
- Despite its theatrical flop, the film rebounded on streaming: Nielsen ratings for the week after its Prime Video debut showed Masters of the Universe as the top streaming title in the U.S., racking up 1.17 billion minutes of watch time.
- After a weak opening weekend, Variety's Rebecca Rubin said the film was shaping up to be one of the biggest box-office bombs of the year, one that would have a hard time justifying its high price tag.
