Plot summary
Narvel Roth is the horticulturist who cares for Gracewood Gardens, the estate of the wealthy dowager Norma Haverhill. He keeps journals, attends to the fine details of the work, and carries a violent past. Mrs. Haverhill tells him to take on her grandniece, Maya Core, who has recently lost her parents, as an apprentice in the gardens, with the idea that the estate will one day stay in the family. Maya has no wish to be trained, and she and Mrs. Haverhill are at odds. Roth teaches her the tasks of the grounds and keeps his own history to himself.
