Plot summary
Ancaster is an elite New England university with a rumored curse attached to Margaret Millett, a woman hanged nearby after an accusation of witchcraft. Gail Bishop arrives as its first Black master and settles into a new residence, which develops a maggot infestation. Jasmine Moore, a Black freshman, is assigned to room 302 beside a white roommate, Amelia. The room belonged in 1965 to Louisa Weeks, Ancaster's first Black undergraduate. Amelia's wealthy white friends draw Jasmine in, yet they leave her to wipe up a spill and never settle for the pizza she orders. From staff and students she meets a stream of microaggressions.
