Plot summary
Mary Morgan, a wealthy American housewife, pulls her son George out of school after classmates bully him, and takes him on a long trip to Southern Africa, starting in South Africa and crossing into Mozambique. She believes she can educate him better herself. A mosquito gets through a hole in his net, and George dies of malaria. Martha O'Connell is English; her grown son Ben, a volunteer teacher at an orphanage in Mozambique, has died of the same disease. After the funeral Mary returns to Africa, and there she and Martha meet. Both women have lost an only child, and each wants to work against the disease that killed their sons.
