Plot summary
Twelve-year-old Morgan is shy and lonely. His grandfather dies while he watches, and his parents send him to a summer camp that had been arranged beforehand rather than let him grieve at home. Nightmares of drowning leave him afraid of water, and his attempt to befriend three older boys is rebuffed. At camp he makes new friends, a boy called C.J. bullies him, and he gets to know Pilar. One night the staff tell a campfire story about a doctor who takes children who leave their bunks and operates on them in a basement. Morgan sees strange flashing from a building, goes inside, finds the basement from the tale, and glimpses the doctor. He tries to convince the others that the doctor is real.
