Plot summary
Below the surface of Mars lives a technological society of Martians, ruled by the Supervisor, who watches Earth and sees Milo's mother making him do his chores. The Martians take her to Mars so her mom-ness can be extracted and implanted in nanny-bots. Milo, punished for feeding the cat broccoli, tells his mother his life would be better without her, then finds her abducted and stows away on the spaceship. On Mars he escapes a prison cell, follows a voice down a chute and lands among furry creatures, who take him to Gribble, a human who says the memories will be extracted at sunrise. Ki, one of the Martians who raise the babies, rescues Milo from the Supervisor's henchmen.
