Plot summary
Lisa Cohen is a seventeen-year-old Manhattan student who, while shopping on the Upper West Side, interacts with the driver of a moving bus, Gerald Maretti, as she runs alongside it. Maretti allows himself to become distracted, and the bus strikes a pedestrian, Monica Patterson. Lisa tells the police the signal was green. Her relationship with her mother, Joan, an actress who has recently found success in a play, is rocky, and she is unsure about Joan's boyfriend Ramon. She and her father go back and forth about a trip to his home.
