Plot summary
Lyle Jensen's outbursts are sudden and violent, and after he attacks another boy during a baseball game with a bat he is placed in the juvenile psychiatric ward of a hospital instead of prison. The ward holds other troubled teens: Tracy, Chad, Michael, Kenny, and Sara. Lyle shares a room with Kenny, a reticent twelve-year-old, and the two form something like a sibling relationship. Confinement is hard on Lyle, and Dr. David Monroe works to get the patients talking in group therapy sessions. Lyle is drawn to Tracy, who is reluctant to become close to him because of her low self-esteem. She has constant terrible nightmares.
