Plot summary

Porter Wren writes a column and covers crime for a New York City newspaper. He attends an after-work party given by Hobbs, the publishing magnate who has just bought the paper, where Caroline Crowley approaches him. Porter knows her from headlines about the death of her husband Simon, a movie producer who often vanished at night to film whatever caught his eye. His body was found in the rubble of a demolished building on a lot that was fenced and locked. Caroline shows Porter confidential police reports on the still-unsolved case and asks him to investigate. Over a series of meetings she seduces him, and Porter, whose marriage to Lisa has gone stale, gives in. Sorting through Simon's belongings, he finds a controlling man who filmed his own life with hidden cameras and tormented Caroline with cruel pranks.
