Plot summary
Malcolm Elliott wrote and directed the film he has just shown at its premiere, and comes home with his girlfriend, Marie Jones. He waits for the reviews after the audience's emotional reaction at the screening. Marie is unhappy, and when he asks what is wrong she says his speech did not thank her or mention her. She believes she is the source of Imani, the Black drug addict at the center of his film, because Marie was a drug addict at the time they met. Malcolm denies it, calling Imani a mix of several people. Marie answers that he could not have portrayed Imani's addiction truthfully without their life together. Malcolm says she is overreacting, notes that she left acting years ago, and claims she envies the actress who played Imani and puts her own troubles onto him.

- Malcolm & Marie was the first Hollywood feature to be entirely written, financed and produced during the COVID-19 lockdowns, with Sam Levinson shooting it in secret in June and July 2020.
- Netflix bought distribution rights to Malcolm & Marie for $30 million, outbidding HBO, Amazon Studios, Searchlight Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Apple TV+, A24 and Focus Features.
- John David Washington joined the film after Sam Levinson read him ten pages of dialogue over the phone; Washington said he couldn't believe the words he heard, beautiful yet disturbing with visceral confrontations.
- With no makeup artists or costume designer on set, Zendaya and John David Washington did their own makeup and picked their own costumes, and no more than 12 people were allowed on set at a time.
- The whole cast and crew were quarantined during shooting and for two weeks before and after it, under local COVID-19 rules that also included daily temperature checks and increased sanitation.
