David Tree

David Tree was an English stage and screen actor who began performing as a child, appearing in a 1921 revival of The Tempest. Born in 1915 into a theatrical family, he trained at the Old Vic and spent three seasons with the Oxford Playhouse repertory company before entering films in 1937. On stage he had a notable success as Mervyn Brudge in Little Ladyship at the Strand Theatre in 1939. His screen credits included Freddy Eynsford-Hill in Pygmalion (1938), a young teacher in Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1939), and Charles Lomax in Major Barbara (1941), as well as Return of the Scarlet Pimpernel and Knight Without Armour. He put his film career on hold during World War II and later wrote the autobiography Pig in the Middle, which became the basis for the sitcom The Good Life.
