Plot summary
Harry Kane and Karl Allen are a successful stage double act, with Harry's wife Carol as their assistant. After a show in which Harry finds Karl with Carol backstage, a guillotine finale goes wrong and the partnership ends. Four years later Harry is fired from a hardware store for frightening a customer with a knife illusion, and Karl is failing as The Mindmonger, a psychological illusionist whose only admirer is Dani, a studio tea girl. Needing money, Harry enters the Magic Shield competition in Jersey for its £20,000 prize and hires Linda, an old acquaintance, as his assistant. He then asks Karl to rejoin him, and their old reputation earns the pair a place in the competition.

- While filming in Nottingham, the production's unit signs kept being stolen by teenagers because they carried the word "magic". Replacements had to be ordered at £3 each.
