Plot summary
Jeanne Bécu, whose mother sewed for a living, works as a milliner's assistant in Paris. Her beauty draws the attention of Count Jean du Barry, who takes her as his mistress and sets out to make her the most successful courtesan in the city. He then sees another possibility, since King Louis XV is aging and keeps mistresses. Royal custom requires that a king's mistress be a married noblewoman, and Jeanne is neither. Jean, already married himself, arranges a marriage between her and his brother Guillaume du Barry, and with the title of Countess du Barry she enters the court at Versailles.
