Plot summary

As a pupil at Brienne College, Napoleon Buonaparte is mocked for his Corsican accent by the other boys, and two bullies, Phélippeaux and Picot de Peccaduc, lead the larger side in a snowball fight the school stages as a battle. Tristan Fleuri, the scullion of the school, is his friend, and in Fleuri's attic he keeps a young eagle sent from Corsica. In 1792, a young army lieutenant in Paris, he watches the Revolution from the periphery and hears the new song La Marseillaise taken up at the Club of the Cordeliers. He travels to Corsica, where Pasquale Paoli plans to give the island to the British and Pozzo di Borgo turns a mob against him, and he brings his family back to France.
