Plot summary
Lucy Cola is an astronaut who returns from her first mission in space and feels cut off from life on Earth. She struggles to fit back into her daily routine with her husband, Drew, and her teenage niece. NASA tells her to rest and to see a therapist. Lucy sets her sights on the next mission and pushes herself through physical and mental training to qualify. While training she meets Mark Goodwin, a fellow astronaut.

- Noah Hawley was brought on to produce a film then titled Pale Blue Dot with Bruna Papandrea and Reese Witherspoon, who was set to star. Witherspoon exited in November 2017 to film the second season of Big Little Lies, and Natalie Portman entered talks to replace her.
- In a 2023 interview, director Noah Hawley said he did not have a great experience making the film: Searchlight had bought and set it up as a Reese Witherspoon black comedy, but he delivered a magic realism astronaut movie with Natalie Portman, and the studio did not know what to do with it.
- In November 2018, retired astronaut Marsha Ivins, who flew five space missions, criticized the film's premise, denying the existence of a longstanding idea that astronauts begin to lose their grip on reality after being in space for an extended period of time.
- After its Toronto premiere, media outlets criticized the film for omitting the salacious elements of Lisa Nowak's real-life case, most notably her alleged use of adult diapers to avoid bathroom breaks during her journey.
