Plot summary
At an orphanage, children trade rumors about Julien and Marguerite de Ravalet, and a caretaker tells their story. The brother and sister grow up devoted to each other in the household of the Lord of Tourlaville. After Julien saves his sister during a horse riding accident, their uncle, the Abbot of Hambye, grows uneasy and urges Jean to send both sons away to study, saying Marguerite distracts them.
