Plot summary
Donn Fendler is twelve years old. He is climbing Maine's highest peak with his father, Donald, and his brothers, Ryan and Tommy. His father and his brothers have not yet reached the summit, and Donn grows tired of waiting for them. He decides to make his way back to camp alone. A fast-moving storm moves in, and fog hides the trail. He falls down an embankment that puts him out of sight, and a wrong turn leaves him on his own in the empty mountain wilderness of Maine, cut off from his family, with a fight ahead to stay alive.
