Plot summary
Sergeant Brock and Goldie, American veterans of the Korean War, now serve as mercenaries in the French Foreign Legion during the First Indochina War. Brock once abandoned his wife, a Chinese-European known as Lucky Legs, and their son after the boy was born with Asian features, and she smuggles goods to keep the child fed. The French high command recruits her for her knowledge of the border country and her ties to Major Cham, a communist officer, to guide a demolition squad under Brock to a hidden Viet Minh ammunition dump near Red China. In exchange, the French promise to arrange passage to America for her five-year-old son.

- Romain Gary, the French Consul-General in Los Angeles, told Samuel Fuller that the prologue of China Gate was too harsh towards France and asked him to change it. Fuller refused, and the film was never released in France.
- China Gate was banned in Israel for what was described as "excessive cruelty" towards Russian and Chinese soldiers.
- Nat King Cole had not intended to sing in China Gate, but he sang the title song while walking through a bombed-out village, followed by Brock's little son, as a tribute to Victor Young.
