Plot summary
Shay Baker is fourteen and lives in Wanstead with his father Nick and his younger sister Alice. Their mother left the family years ago, and Nick says she lives a bohemian life in London. Shay splits his days between the piano shop Nick owns and minding Alice. Nick sends him into the city to collect parts from a music supplier, and on the train he meets Vivian Daniels, a punk girl with The Clash playing on her Walkman. Shay follows her through London, and she explains the politics around the music: the Clash stand for racial cooperation and working-class empowerment, while skinheads back white power and the National Front. They get the last two tickets for a Clash concert the next day. That night at home, Shay listens to the Clash album and dyes his hair black.
