Plot summary
Leo works at the plant in a small Australian town in 1971. After his wife vanishes he is left with two young children, Maudey and Jack, and cannot manage the cooking or keep the household running. A colleague newly arrived from Italy suggests that Maria, his sister, act as homemaker, and Leo agrees only after hesitating. Maria is also finding her place in a country that is not hers. Beyond the family the country is changing. Migrants settle after the war, anti-Vietnam War protests go on, and the women's liberation movement pushes for change.
