Plot summary
Olivia lives without papers in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, and works as the live-in caregiver of Olga, an older Russian-Jewish woman whose memory is failing and who relies on Olivia to confirm where she is. She supports her family in the Philippines, and she is making payments to Matthew, an American man she is dating, toward a marriage that would give her a green card. She fears immigration agents could detain her at any moment. Olga's grown grandson Alex comes to stay in the apartment after time in rehab. He is hotheaded and unsure how to handle his grandmother's care, and he takes work at his uncle's slaughterhouse while trying to stay sober. He and Olivia grow close, and he does not know she is trans.
