Plot summary
A planet called Turo holds the trial where the United Galactic Federation convicts Dr. Jumba Jookiba over his illegal genetic experiments. His creation, Experiment 626, is aggressive and nearly impossible to destroy. Captain Gantu is meant to escort the creature into exile, but 626 seizes a space cruiser and crashes on Kauaʻi, in Hawaii. The Grand Councilwoman offers Jumba his freedom if he brings 626 back, and assigns Agent Pleakley, the council's Earth specialist, to assist. Meanwhile Nani Pelekai raises her younger sister Lilo after their parents die. Social worker Cobra Bubbles questions whether Nani can remain Lilo's guardian and gives her three days to improve things. At an animal shelter, Lilo picks the creature as her dog and calls him Stitch.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Lilo & Stitch (2002)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- With only weeks of production left, the September 11 attacks forced the filmmakers to scrap a climax in which Stitch, Nani, Jumba and Pleakley hijack a Boeing 747 through downtown Honolulu; it was reworked to use Jumba's spacecraft flying through the mountains of Kauai.
- To secure a U certificate from the British Board of Film Classification, a scene of Lilo hiding in a clothes dryer was changed to a commode with a pizza-box door; that UK edit later became the standard version of the film everywhere, including Disney+.
- Chris Sanders pitched teasers in which Stitch invades other Disney films; four parody trailers nicknamed "Inter-stitch-als" were made, with Stitch crashing scenes from The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and The Lion King.
- Sanders and DeBlois chose watercolor-painted backgrounds instead of Disney's usual gouache, reviving a technique largely abandoned by the mid-1940s; Sanders wanted the storybook look and art direction of Dumbo, so background artists had to be trained in the medium.
- The budget was too small for computer-generated imagery, so the film stayed hand-drawn; it was also too small for pockets, clothing designs and most shadows, so many scenes were set in shaded areas that saved shadows for pivotal moments.
- Daveigh Chase won the voice role of Lilo in the fall of 1998, beating 150 other candidates considered for the part.
- Cobra Bubbles was first envisioned as a nebbish with Jeff Goldblum in mind, but Goldblum declined and the character was reconceived as more intimidating; Sanders and DeBlois then cast Ving Rhames after recalling his performance in Pulp Fiction.
