Plot summary
Manuel Jordan has served close to 23 years for the death of a teenager, Abner Easley, in a robbery attempt, and is released on parole even though he objected. He goes back to the city he once lived in with a clipping of the boy's face, and the preacher Miles Evans gives him work and a room at the house he runs. There he meets Sofia Mellinger, a young woman who has no adult looking out for her, and Adele Easley, Abner's elder sister, who does not recognize him. The two become friends as he looks for a way to make up for what he did.
