Plot summary
Leo, a tuatara, and Squirtle, a Florida box turtle, have lived for years as class pets in a fifth-grade classroom in Fort Myers. When their pregnant teacher, Mrs. Salinas, begins her maternity leave, the strict substitute Virginia Malkin takes her place, and the students quickly dislike her. At a parent-teacher conference, Leo overhears a parent mention that tuataras can live 75 years. At 74, he realizes he has never visited the Everglades, the wild place he has long dreamed of. He plans to escape, but a talkative student named Summer takes him home for a weekend instead. While trying to get away, Leo accidentally speaks to her, revealing that he can talk, and he suggests she ask her classmates more questions to improve her conversations. Summer follows his advice and becomes more popular.
