Plot summary
A visual companion to the album of the same name, the film runs through eleven chapters, among them Denial, Anger, Apathy and Forgiveness. Its songs and spoken poems sit alongside documentary material. A woman in a fur coat leans against a car in a parking garage; elsewhere she appears in a black hoodie among reeds, on an empty stage, and in a flowing yellow dress that carries her from a courthouse onto a busy street. On a plantation, women in white stand while a poem is recited. Majorettes and a high school band parade down a suburban street, dancers in black approach an SUV, and a circle of fire is lit. The film takes up racial issues and feminist concepts.

- In June 2016, Matthew Fulks sued Beyoncé, Sony Music, Columbia Records and Parkwood Entertainment, claiming the Lemonade trailer copied nine visual elements of his short film Palinoia; New York federal judge Jed S. Rakoff dismissed the suit and ruled for the defendants.
- The film alludes to Igbo Landing, where captured Africans are said to have chosen drowning over slavery, in a scene of women dressed in white walking in a line into the ocean.
