Plot summary
Amanda Sandford arranges a weekend getaway at a vacation rental with her husband Clay and their children Archie and Rose. At the store she notices a man loading his cart with canned food and water. At a beach nearby, the family dodges an oil tanker that runs aground. Back at the house the television and internet are dead, and deer watch them from the yard. That night G.H. Scott, who owns the house, arrives with his daughter Ruth and says a blackout drove them back. Amanda is suspicious and wants them gone; Clay lets them stay.

- During the writing process, former U.S. President Barack Obama gave director Sam Esmail notes on the screenplay, including thoughts on the characters and how much empathy audiences would feel for them.
- Denzel Washington left the project and was replaced by Mahershala Ali, who was cast in September 2021; Ethan Hawke and Myha'la Herrold joined in January 2022.
- Composer Mac Quayle built the score out of a single nine-note idea drawn from French composer Olivier Messiaen's Mode 3, a scale he ended up using for the whole film.
- Sam Esmail avoided songs already used on TV or film so viewers would have no associations with them, picking Next's "Too Close" for a scene that shifts from playful to dark in a minute.
