Plot summary
Edee Holzer tells her therapist that she avoids people, then leaves the city for a small, remote cabin on land in Wyoming. She means to live there in solitude, without a telephone or a car linking her to the outside world. Chopping firewood and fishing prove hard, and a black bear breaks into the cabin, eats her food and ruins her supplies while she hides. When a snowstorm damages the cabin and she is hurt trying to fix it, the hunter Miguel and his friend Alawa, a nurse, find her and help her recover. Edee says she came to be alone. Miguel offers to teach her the survival skills that would let her keep the solitude she wants.
