Plot summary
David Lamb lives in a motel and visits his dying father, Walter, who soon dies. In a parking lot in Chicago, Tommie, eleven, is sent by her friends to ask him for a cigarette. He gives her one, then pretends to kidnap her to frighten the friends, and takes her home. David tells Linny, with whom he has sex in the office stairwell, that he is going to his country property to clear his head. He meets Tommie again in the lot, calls himself Gary, and offers to buy her lunch. She lies to her mother Linda and Linda's boyfriend Jesse about where she has been. He asks her on a weeklong camping trip, promising to bring her back before anyone worries. In a hotel he tells her she can leave at any time; she chooses to stay.
