Plot summary
The Monster Ball Tour, a worldwide concert tour staged around Lady Gaga's EP The Fame Monster and her debut album The Fame, reaches Madison Square Garden in New York City, the singer's hometown, for two nights in February 2011. The special pairs concert footage with scenes from before and behind the stage. The revamped show carries a New York story: on stage, Gaga and her friends are lost in the city and searching for the Monster Ball, with each segment bringing new outfits and songs. Off stage, she is seen ordering coffee at a convenience store, riding in an SUV, and backstage removing her makeup while talking about feeling like a loser.

- Audio engineer Brian Riordan made the concert mix "center-channeled" since Lady Gaga used no backing audio, and his team kept the mix uncompressed, using one-to-one audio mixing for a more impactful sound.
- The special won one Primetime Emmy, for picture editing, and lost its four other bids; its five nominations were among the 104 HBO received for 2011.
- To build the Blu-ray's 5.1 surround mix, the team used recordings from microphones placed around the audience members at Madison Square Garden, giving the surround sound a new dimension.
