Plot summary
In 1987, Adele Wheeler is raising her young son, Henry, in a house in the countryside. Several miscarriages left her in a state of depression, and her husband moved out because he could not live with her sadness. She is uncomfortable in public and seldom leaves the house. While the two of them shop just before the Labor Day weekend, a wounded man approaches them and makes them drive him to their home. He is Frank Chambers, an escaped convict whom the police are hunting. Frank sets about repairing the house: he fixes up the yard, does chores, and works on Adele's car, while teaching Henry to change a tire and pitch a baseball.

- Paramount partnered with the American Pie Council to promote the film, and the council produced materials promoting both the movie and National Pie Day on January 23, eight days before the film's general American release.
- Reitman wanted to make the film right after his 2009 film Up in the Air, but because of Winslet's scheduling conflicts he chose to direct Young Adult first.
- The team searched the entire state of Massachusetts for the house, driving down streets and knocking on doors for weeks; the one they found was perfect but very modern, and Steve brought it back to 1987.
- Talking about the music, Kent said that creating something simple yet sophisticated, that left the listener curious and a little unnerved, called him to forget everything he knew about composition and discover a whole new musical language.
