Plot summary
Dylan and Kylie are next-door neighbors from dysfunctional families on the outskirts of Dublin. On Christmas Day they run away together, and Dylan hopes to find his brother, who left home two years earlier. Dylan tells Kylie what his father is like. Kylie speaks of the Sack Man, said to kill children, and Dylan calls it a story adults use to keep kids in line. When Dylan's father punches Dylan's mother, Dylan strikes him with a handheld videogame and is chased upstairs; Kylie brings a ladder to the bathroom window, and he escapes.
