Trailer

Plot summary

Laura Hoff lives with her mother, Mari Hoff, in a working-class house in Scarborough, Yorkshire. Her nickname, LV, stands for Little Voice, and it comes from a speaking voice so soft and seldom used that she keeps to herself. Since her father died she has stayed in her bedroom with his records, singing along in the voices of Marilyn Monroe, Gracie Fields, Judy Garland and Shirley Bassey. Mari is loud, has no patience for her daughter's grief, and takes up with Ray Say, a talent agent who has run out of luck. A shy telephone engineer, Billy, who keeps homing pigeons, fits a new phone line in the house and begins to talk with her. Ray overhears LV singing and, hunting for an act that will make his name, promises to put her on a stage.
