Plot summary

For centuries Lucis has guarded the Crystal, and the empire of Niflheim has fought to take it. The crown city of Insomnia is shielded by the Wall, a barrier powered by King Regis, and defended by the Kingsglaive, soldiers drawn from outside the city who wield magic the king shares with them. Among them is Nyx Ulric, who defies an order to withdraw so he can pull his friend Libertus from a Daemon. As Regis grows weaker with age and the war grinds on, he accepts an armistice from Niflheim's chancellor, Ardyn Izunia: the lands around Insomnia pass to the empire, and Prince Noctis will marry Lady Lunafreya Nox Fleuret, the former princess of Tenebrae, held under Niflheim's rule. Many of the Kingsglaive feel the terms abandon the families they left behind.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV (2016)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Kingsglaive was only half-finished two and a half months before its planned release, and director Takeshi Nozue estimated that without outside studio help it would have taken a staff of five hundred people to finish on time.
  • Kingsglaive's story was built from a portion of the original opening of Final Fantasy XV — the invasion of Insomnia by Niflheim's army — that was cut from the game over concerns about the volume of content, then reused for the film.
  • Around 50 companies worked on the film, among them Digic Pictures, which had worked on Assassin's Creed graphics, and Image Engine, which had worked on Jurassic World and Game of Thrones; it was Square Enix's first major CGI collaboration and was called unconventional in Japan.
  • Crowe's hair was based on the hairstyle of the main female protagonist of Agni's Philosophy, and both her and Lunafreya's hairstyles were first modelled on a real mannequin wig; their rendered wigs used 3,000 curves each, 1,000 more than originally estimated.
  • Insomnia, the capital of Lucis, was based generally on international cities with its core modelled on Tokyo; Western elements were added after fans criticised it for looking too much like Tokyo in the game's early stages.
