Plot summary
In 2022, Akihiko Kayaba releases Sword Art Online, a virtual reality game played through a device called the NerveGear. On the day it opens, ten thousand players log in and discover they cannot log out. Kayaba tells them that the only way free is to clear all one hundred floors of Aincrad, the steel castle that forms the game's world, and that dying inside it, or having the NerveGear removed, will destroy their brains. High school student Asuna Yuuki logs in to play with her friend Misumi Tozawa, known in the game as Mito. Mito, an original beta tester, leads Asuna to monsters far from the starting town so she can level up quickly. When a swarm of plant monsters overwhelms Asuna in the mountains, a solo swordsman named Kirito saves her.
