Plot summary
Eli Solinski is fourteen and lives in Detroit with Hal, his adoptive father. While stripping copper wire from a derelict building, he finds the wreckage of a fight: armored bodies, advanced equipment, and a weapon that stirs to life in his hands before he drops it and runs. That night his older brother Jimmy, Hal's own son, comes home from prison, and the two men argue. Jimmy owes sixty thousand dollars to a local crime boss named Taylor Balik, and he wants Hal's help taking the money from the man he works for. Hal turns him down and throws him out.
