Plot summary

In 1949, Japan has avoided war with the United States, and the capital, Teito, is split between a wealthy aristocracy that owns most of the country's riches and a poor majority. The military-industrial complex has built a Tesla-style energy beam capable of devastating destruction. A masked thief known as K-20, short for the Fiend with Twenty Faces, steals from the rich, and the city panics. Heikichi Endo, a circus acrobat, accepts a job from a scarred man who says he works for Kastori Magazine: photograph the wedding of duchess Yoko Hashiba and the detective Akechi Kogoro. An explosion during the ceremony leaves Heikichi arrested for K-20's crimes and determined to clear his name.
