Plot summary
Hank lives in a room at the Pink Motel and works security at the high school in Baymont, a southern town with no strangers. In his free time he fishes and keeps tortoises. Josie, a teenage newcomer, asks him to help her move into the motel, then turns up in a class at the school and takes Marcus as her partner on a paired assignment, which upsets his friend Gator. Josie and Marcus spend time together beyond the schoolwork, and Hank becomes friendly with her too, to the disapproval of their neighbor Martha, who objects to the age gap.
