Plot summary
Roman Kacew recounts his life. He recalls a childhood spent in Poland and a youth in Lithuania with Nina, his mother, who raised him alone. Hitler's rise to power in Germany drove the family to leave for the south of France, and he passed his adolescence in Nice before his student years in Paris. When World War II came, he joined the French Air Force and went through tough training as a pilot. The life he recounts is that of one of France's best-known novelists and the only writer to have won the Goncourt Prize twice.
