Plot summary
Gustave Eiffel is honored for the iron skeleton he designed to hold up the Statue of Liberty, and he considers what to build next for the 1889 World's Fair in Paris. Maurice Koechlin and Émile Nouguier, two of his employees, propose a 200-meter steel tower; he turns it down and favors a Metro system for the city. To win publicity for his firm he contacts Antoine de Restac, a journalist and an old friend. At a society party he meets Adrienne, Restac's wife, and an odd, instant connection passes between them; Eiffel suddenly announces that he will build a 300-meter steel tower. In Bordeaux in 1860 he is building a bridge over the Garonne when a worker falls into the river, and he dives in after him.
