Biography

Barry Nelson was an American actor who worked on stage, in films and on television. Born in San Francisco, he took lead roles in school plays in Oakland, acted in student theater at UC Berkeley and worked on San Francisco radio before MGM gave him his first screen role, in Shadow of the Thin Man (1941), which was followed by the film noir Johnny Eager (1941). He later became the first performer to embody Ian Fleming's secret agent James Bond, in a 1954 small-screen version of Casino Royale. His Broadway credits took in Winged Victory, The Rat Race, The Moon Is Blue, The Fig Leaves Are Falling and Cactus Flower, and The Act (1977) brought him a Tony nomination for best actor in a musical. He headlined the 1959 series Hudson's Bay, guested on Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Twilight Zone, and appeared as hotel manager Stuart Ullman in The Shining (1980).
