Charles Dingle
Biography
Charles Dingle was an American actor who worked on stage and in films. Born in Wabash, Indiana, and raised in Indianapolis, he left school at 14 and made his dramatic debut in Forgiven playing a 65-year-old man. At 18 he was leading man of the Woodward Stock Company. After selling real estate in New Jersey, he appeared on Broadway in Killers in 1928, then returned to acting when sales slowed. He later played Duke Theseus in a 1932 revival of A Midsummer Night's Dream and Sheriff Cole in Let Freedom Ring, and in 1950 he took his first musical role in Irving Berlin's Miss Liberty. Across more than fifty features he was often cast as sharp, ruthless businessmen and villains. His roles included Ben Hubbard in both stage and screen versions of The Little Foxes (1941), praised by critic Bosley Crowther, and Senator Brockway in Call Me Madam (1953). He ended his stage career in 1954 with The Immoralist.
