Plot summary
Jerry Selbee lives with his wife, Marge, in Evart, Michigan, and retires from his factory job after 42 years. Looking for something to occupy him, and adept at mathematics, he works out a loophole in a lottery called WinFall: when a jackpot reaches $2 million and nobody wins it, the prize is distributed to the next tier of winners, which means a player who buys enough tickets stands to make a net profit. Jerry takes $2,000 to a convenience store in Lake City to try the theory, and he loses. He decides he needs more tickets to remove luck from the equation, empties his bank account, returns with $8,000 and wins over $15,000. Marge learns what he has been doing and wants them to play together.
