Plot summary
Nikos Mantas comes home to Greece after finishing his studies in the United States, and his uncle Miltos Kassandris, the shipowner who supported him all those years, wants something back: a seat in parliament. The island Nikos is to stand on is largely in the hands of Kosmas Skoutaris, who backs another candidate and owes money he cannot pay. Kassandris buys up the debts and proposes that Nikos marry Kosmas' daughter Jenny, a friend from childhood. Nikos, however, is already secretly married to Yvonni Karipi, or believes he is. Kassandris' wife Diana devises a solution, and Yvonni agrees to it. The marriage is to last three months, until the election, and is not to be consummated. Jenny is told only that Nikos loves another woman.
