Plot summary
In an Athens neighborhood, Pandelis runs a small grocery store and carries himself like a man of standing. His clerk, Zikos, speaks his mind whenever the owner puts on airs, and the two of them bicker across the counter. Pandelis sets his heart on Litsa, a poor young woman who lives nearby, and calls on the local matchmaker to arrange a marriage, counting on his money to carry the day. Zikos, meanwhile, is taken with Fifika, Litsa's closest friend. Neither man knows that Litsa and Fifika already have sweethearts of their own, Kitsaras and Argiris, who are close friends as well.
