Plot summary
Sarah Taylor is a teenager in Margate, in Kent, England. At home she holds the household together: her mother, Karen Taylor, has mental health problems, so Sarah cares for her and two younger siblings, and money from a part-time job helps the family get by. The pressures of caring, school and work fall on her, she is bullied at school, and an exploitative boss takes advantage of her at work. Her drama teacher offers her a new purpose, which becomes an outlet for the despair building in her and a way to push back against what she faces.
