Plot summary
Alan Mangold teaches at a university and lives in a shoebox apartment, and he dreams of a better life than the one he has, if he can ever finish his opus, "Orphan Bastard." When his Nana dies, the emergency trip across the country is more than he and Amanda can pay for, so they post an ad at the university looking for a student to split the costs. Jeffie replies, a man who calls himself a scholar and a poet and believes he lives an enlightened life. The couple takes him along. At first, he seems to have answered their notice at random.
