Plot summary
An earthquake under Suruga Bay leaves submersible pilot Toshio Onodera trapped in his car in Numazu. Reiko Abe arrives by rescue helicopter and lifts him and a young girl, Misaki, from a ruined street as a volcano erupts nearby, and Reiko's family takes Misaki in after her mother is hurt. Scientists warn the government that Japan will sink within 40 years, but geoscientist Yusuke Tadokoro, who has studied rocks from Kyushu, Hokkaido and Mangaia in the Cook Islands, puts the deadline at 338.54 days. The Cabinet rejects his warning and has him removed from the chamber. Prime Minister Yamamoto names Saori Takamori, Tadokoro's ex-wife, as disaster management minister and flies to China to arrange the resettlement of Japanese refugees.
