Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Digital Devil Story - Megami Tensei (1987)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Before Atlus and Telenet Japan picked up the license for Aya Nishitani's novels, it was pitched to Nintendo, which turned it down because of the books' mature elements, so the license was offered to other publishers.
- The license to adapt Aya Nishitani's novels was simultaneously acquired by two companies, Atlus, which applied through Namco, and Telenet Japan. They wanted to differentiate their products, so, since the Famicom was known for action games and PCs for RPGs, both deliberately played against platform expectations.
- No version of the game has been released outside Japan, which has been attributed to Nintendo's policy of censoring religious references, making the early Megami Tensei titles unsuitable for localization. A fan translation of Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei was released on August 28, 2014.
- Kazunari Suzuki said the Atlus game's mechanics began as a near-copy of Wizardry because their superiors were fans of that series; Suzuki insisted on a new feature, and the demon negotiation system was the result.
- Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei was the first game in the Megami Tensei series; Atlus eventually bought the franchise rights and turned it into their most famous property, and the series has been called Japan's third most popular RPG line after Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy.
