Plot summary
Ryan rides freight trains and plays bluegrass, and he arrives in Ogden, Utah, hoping to find his friend Cowboy. Cowboy has moved on, so Ryan busks in town with Cowboy's brother, and Jackie recognizes their talent and asks why they play only covers. When a pickup knocks Jackie down, Ryan rushes to help, setting his guitar and pack against a wall; the pack is stolen. The driver leaves them at the house of Jackie's mother, Miriam, where Jackie mentions she was once a known musician. Ryan stays for dinner, and against Miriam's wishes Jackie offers him a cot. In the morning he spots a leaking porch roof that needs repair before winter and stays a few days. Money is tight for Jackie, who argues by phone with Wes, her almost ex-husband, about custody of her daughter Lia.
